Ballet

Ballet is the foundation of all dance styles and has been constantly evolving for over 400 years. It is very technical and helps to improve your core stability, strength and flexibility, all of which are needed to be a successful dancer. It is now an extremely popular dance style with its own vocabulary based on French terminology.

Primary ballet class is suitable from the age of 5 upward, where they will learn the most basic and fundamental movements whilst incorporating story telling and themes. Again props such as pom poms, flags and ribbons are used to help develop co-ordination and natural movement. These younger classes are to help children become spatially aware, to enhance their listening skills, to boost confidence and to allow them to become more social.

From there, students follow the graded ballet syllabus, taught by ISTD qualified teachers, with examinations through the TDSC exam board. Exams are offered but never compulsory. Plenty of our dancers take ballet purely because they love it, and that is a perfectly good reason. Those who do enter are prepared properly, in class, without extra pressure or expense being sprung on families.

Senior and Intermediate ballet includes pointework for students whose strength and technique are ready for it. That readiness is a judgement made by the teacher about the individual dancer, not by age or by how long someone has been coming, because getting it wrong risks injury.

Because ballet underpins everything else, most of our dancers who take modern, commercial or musical theatre take a ballet class alongside it. The postural control and turnout show up immediately in every other style.

Our ballet classes in Scunthorpe are taught at the studio on Brumby Wood Lane, and families travel in from across North Lincolnshire including Ashby, Bottesford, Messingham, Broughton, Winterton and Brigg.
