Modern

Modern dance is a rhythmic dance form and takes elements from lots of different styles. This is a high energy dance style which has big movements such as kicks, turns and leaps. These all develop a student's strength, flexibility and power.

Modern jazz combines lots of styles and techniques and is one of the most popular types of modern we often see on TV or in musicals. The movements are big, sharp and strong.

From the age of 5 students can study the TDSC Modern syllabus, which in Primary follows the concept of play with basic motor skill movements such as running, jumping, hopping and galloping. This modern syllabus will allow students to develop posture, strength, musicality, spatial awareness and co-ordination.

Teaching the fundamentals as play rather than as technique is what lets a five-year-old succeed in the class on their first morning. Running, jumping and galloping are things they can already do; the syllabus simply gives them shape.

Modern is often the class where a dancer's personality shows up. It has more room for attack and expression than ballet does at the same level, and it tends to be where quieter children surprise their parents.

Students can take TDSC examinations at each grade, prepared by an ISTD qualified teacher who is also a lead examiner for that board. As with every discipline we teach, exams are optional and entering is a conversation rather than an expectation.

Our modern dance classes in Scunthorpe run at the studio on Brumby Wood Lane, and we welcome dancers from Scunthorpe, Ashby, Bottesford, Brumby, Messingham, Broughton, Brigg and the wider North Lincolnshire area.
