About commercial

Commercial dance is an ever-growing trend due to television programmes and music videos. This is the type of dance we often see when watching The X Factor, or when watching a pop or R&B artist in concert. Commercial takes elements of genres such as jazz, street, hip-hop and breakdancing and combines them into one. We see lots of this style now on social media, as it has become a trend to upload commercial dance videos onto media platforms.

That familiarity matters. Children arrive already wanting to move like something they have seen, and the class gives them the technique to actually do it. It is often the class that brings in students who would never have described themselves as dancers.

There is no syllabus and no exam in commercial. What there is instead is choreography: routines learned, cleaned and performed, with a strong emphasis on musicality, attack and performing to the front rather than to the mirror.

Underneath the commercial vocabulary the technique is real. Dancers work on isolation, control, floor work, rhythm and stamina, and those who also take modern or ballet tend to progress fastest because the two feed each other.

Our commercial dance classes are grouped by age, so a younger dancer is never trying to keep up with teenagers and seniors get choreography pitched at their level. Classes run at the studio on Brumby Wood Lane in Scunthorpe.

Questions parents ask

What is commercial dance?

A blend of jazz, street, hip-hop and breakdancing. It is the style you see behind pop and R&B artists in concert, on programmes like The X Factor, and across social media.

Are there exams in commercial dance?

No. There is no syllabus and no exam. Classes are choreography-led, with routines learned, cleaned and performed.

Is commercial suitable for boys?

Yes, and it is often the class that brings boys into dance, because the style is one they already recognise from music videos rather than something that feels foreign.

Does my child need any dance experience to start commercial?

None at all. Classes are grouped by age, so a beginner is learning alongside others at a similar stage rather than trying to keep up with a room of trained dancers.

Can my child have a free trial class?

Absolutely. We offer one free trial class per new student, so your child can meet their teachers and classmates and see what Studio 7 is all about before committing to anything.

What should my child wear to their first class?

There is no need to buy uniform straight away. Something comfortable they can move freely in is absolutely fine. Once they have settled in, we will advise you on the correct Studio 7 uniform and dance shoes.

Where are your classes held?

All classes are at our studio at the British Red Cross Building, Brumby Wood Lane, Scunthorpe DN17 1AB. There is parking on site and families travel in from across North Lincolnshire.

How do I pay for classes?

Invoices are issued at the start of each term through your parent portal, covering the lessons in that block. You can pay by card online, by bank transfer, or in cash at the studio. If a dancer joins part-way through a term you are only charged for the lessons left.
