About musical theatre
Musical theatre is a performing art that combines dance, singing and acting to tell a story. Musical theatre classes teach a performer to become a triple threat, which if going into the performing industry makes a person successful.
During these classes students will study different musicals, learning the history of the show and delving into the characters and how to portray each one. At the end of each term, students will be able to show their parent or carer a number of pieces from each show in a small performance in the studio.
That end-of-term performance is small, informal and unticketed, and it is often the moment a family sees what their child has actually been doing all term. Performing regularly to a friendly audience is also the single most effective way to build stage confidence.
Musical theatre suits children who like the story as much as the steps, and it is a good first class for a child who is drawn to performing but nervous about a technique-led discipline. It also gives students already taking ballet, tap or modern somewhere to put that technique to use.
Classes are taught by Miss Lauren, a graduate of Performers College with a Level 6 Diploma in Dance and Musical Theatre from Trinity College London, whose professional career spans summer seasons at the Scarborough Spa, pantomime at the Baths Hall and touring work.
Our musical theatre classes in Scunthorpe run at the studio on Brumby Wood Lane, and are grouped into junior and senior classes so the material suits the age in the room.

Questions parents ask
What happens in a musical theatre class?
Students study a different musical each term, learning the history of the show and working on the characters, combining dance, singing and acting. At the end of term they perform pieces from it to parents and carers in the studio.
Does my child need to be able to sing?
No. Singing is part of what the class teaches rather than something a child needs before joining, and confidence usually arrives before technique does.
Is there a big show with tickets and costumes to pay for?
The end-of-term performance is held in the studio, is informal and is not ticketed. Anything larger is optional and always discussed with families well in advance.
What age is musical theatre for?
Classes are split into junior and senior groups, running from around 5 up to 18 and over, so the material and the shows studied suit the age in the room.
Can my child have a free trial class?
Absolutely. We offer one free trial class per new student, so your child can meet their teachers and classmates and see what Studio 7 is all about before committing to anything.
What should my child wear to their first class?
There is no need to buy uniform straight away. Something comfortable they can move freely in is absolutely fine. Once they have settled in, we will advise you on the correct Studio 7 uniform and dance shoes.
Where are your classes held?
All classes are at our studio at the British Red Cross Building, Brumby Wood Lane, Scunthorpe DN17 1AB. There is parking on site and families travel in from across North Lincolnshire.
How do I pay for classes?
Invoices are issued at the start of each term through your parent portal, covering the lessons in that block. You can pay by card online, by bank transfer, or in cash at the studio. If a dancer joins part-way through a term you are only charged for the lessons left.
